Warriors of God by James Reston Jr.6/10/2023 This work's portrait of Saladin brings to life the wise, highly cultured leader who realized an enduring Arab dream by united Egypt and Syria and whose conquest of Jerusalem not only sparked the Third Crusade but ignited the first jihad and turned Saladin into a hero of epic proportions. Richard the Lionheart, commonly depicted as the romantic personification of chivalry, here emerges in his full complexity and contradictions as the author examines the dark side of Richard's role as the leader of the blood-soaked Crusades, and breaks new ground by openly discussing Richard's homosexuality. A dual biography of the legendary Richard the Lionheart and the Sultan Saladin, iconic hero of the Islamic world, the author recounts the life of each man and reveals the passions of the times that brought them face-to-face in the final battle of the Third Crusade. This volume recreates the collision of the Christian holy wars and the Muslim jihad at the end of the twelfth century.

My Stories, My Times by Jean Chrétien6/10/2023 This report by The Canadian Press was first published on Oct. My Stories, My Times: 2 Volume Set by Jean Chretien Hardcover Book Condition: Fine Jacket Condition: Fine Category: History - Canadian ISBN: 9780735277342. This simple but joyous collection of anecdotes and memories fills me with two reactions: (1) I miss Jean Chretien and his leadership very much (2) I have never. He pointed to the adoption by him and his wife Aline of an 18-month-old Indigenous boy as evidence of his devotion to the cause. "Someone in my family, who went to a residential school in Fort George, told me they were sexually assaulted every day, for eight years by a nun," Jean said.Ĭhrétien repeated throughout Sunday's interview that he deeply cared about Indigenous issues while he was in power. While Chrétien said he never heard of nor experienced abuse while he was in boarding school, insinuating he "mustn't have been a pretty boy at that time," Jean recalled completely different stories from his family. "And he's not alone." Jean explained that most people tend to wrongly associate these institutions with schools, where you "teach people how to write." Chrétien, with all respect, doesn't exactly realize what a residential school was," Jean said. Innu author Michel Jean, another guest on the talk show, criticized Chrétien's comparison of residential schools to his own boarding school experience.

Many of the individuals involved in these practices of informal empire were themselves shaped by particularly Austrian understandings of cultural and geographic diversity. Austrian explorers could be found in scientific expeditions around the world. The Empire of the Habsburgs may not have constituted a global economic or political power but even if its government self-consciously eschewed a global role, its businesses and manufacturers, along with individual scholars, entrepreneurs, military experts, scientists and adventurers initiated a range of what we could call “informal imperial ventures.” In terms of commerce, the Austrian Lloyd came to dominate European trade and passenger travel to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Levant, while companies like the Bohemian munitions producer Škoda negotiated contracts in Latin America and China. This move to the transnational has also increasingly caused historians of the Habsburg Empire to question the confining model of the empire as merely “continental,” in order to explore the global dimensions of an empire that held no extra-European colonies (save for a neighborhood concession in Tianjin China). A near universal enthusiasm for transnational approaches to historical questions has given Habsburg History a robust centrality to histories of Europe, especially with regard to migration, borderland studies, and to the concept of national indifference.

Anxious people by6/8/2023 (Image credit: Netflix) The Hostages Stayed In Touch After Their Release Zarah finally read the letter, in which Gustav absolved her of any blame surrounding his death. After Gustav’s death, Zarah never opened the letter that young Jack had delivered, but she became obsessed with learning more about Gustav, which is why she was at the apartment the day of the hostage situation.Įstelle was able to explain to Jack and Zarah that Gustav had terminal cancer and had chosen to take his life, and though Gustav's death had haunted both of them throughout their lives, there had been nothing either of them could have done. Zarah was a banker who had denied Gustav a loan the same day he died by suicide. Finally, the envelope was addressed to Zarah, another of the hostages. The boy he’d handed the letter to was Jack, the younger of the two police officers. The man on the bridge was named Gustav, and he was Estelle’s son. While it was unclear at the time how the man was connected to the hostage situation, he actually had ties to multiple characters. The man handed the boy an envelope to deliver and then jumped. The series opened with a seemingly out-of-context scene, where a young boy tried to talk a man out of jumping off of a bridge.
